Does hearing the word beehive make you think of honey, flying insects, or a certain hairdo? I’m not surprised! When I think of the word, however, I think of the statewide interlibrary loan service that MLC provides to libraries across Mississippi. Beehive Resource Sharing enables participating libraries to request materials that they don’t have in their collections, thereby expanding their collections by hundreds of times. Books, DVDs, articles, and more can be borrowed and lent across the state. I’ve included a few of the top-requested titles from June below, so you can see what other Mississippians are reading. You may find your next favorite summer read, and if it’s not at your local library, don’t fret! Ask them to request the title through Beehive.
The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women by Kate Moore (adult nonfiction). This title was the hottest book in June, requested 18 times across Mississippi!
Description (from NoveList Plus): Recounts the struggles of hundreds of women who were exposed to radium while working factory jobs during World War I, describing how they were mislead by their employers and became embroiled in a battle for workers’ rights.
All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me by Patrick Bingley (adult nonfiction). This was the second most-requested title with 10 requests in June.
Description (from NoveList Plus): A fascinating, revelatory portrait of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and its treasures by a former New Yorker staffer who spent a decade as a museum guard.
Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall. Adult Fiction. One of the top-requested fiction titles!
Description (from NoveList Plus): Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.
The Inmate by Frieda McFadden. Adult Fiction.
Description (from NoveList Plus): There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men’s maximum-security prison: 1) Treat all prisoners with respect. 2) Never reveal any personal information. 3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates. But none of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules. Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson. And they certainly don’t know that Shane was Brooke’s high school sweetheart–the star quarterback who is now spending the rest of his life in prison for a series of grisly murders. Or that Brooke’s testimony was what put him there. But Shane knows. And he will never forget.
