Welcome to November, and the eleventh month of the Read with MLC 2025 Reading Challenge! This month’s goal is to read a book that you found out about on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok. According to Sprout Social, there are over 2 billion active users on Instagram and TikTok, over 2 ½ billion on YouTube, and over 3 billion on Facebook. Readaholics like you (and me!) can log in to find out which books are keeping people up reading past their bedtimes.

Because these recommendations are typically grassroots instead of commercial, from real-live readers instead of publishers, they can give you an idea of what kind of books these actually are. Is this book going to tear your heart out or is it a cozy read? Does it follow the tropes you enjoy or is it going to veer in directions that make you uncomfortable? In addition, many public libraries, authors, and celebrity book lovers share their favorite reads on these platforms, too, making it even easier to discover what hot new reading trends are. On some occasions, this has even resurrected books from several years ago, giving them a new chance at life in readers’ hands. All you have to do to join in is follow the hashtags. #FacebookReads, #Bookstagram, #BookTube, and #BookTok are popular ones to get you started, but you can also explore hashtags specific to genres you like, such as #FantasyReads, or general reading hashtags, like #BookLovers.

If you’ve cut social media out of your life, don’t worry: you can still participate. MLC’s BookMatch service is an incredible way to find books popular on social media that are chosen just for you. Your answers on our short form give us an idea of your likes and dislikes; we’ll send you a short list of suggested titles tailored to your specific tastes. It’s time to snuggle under a cozy blanket, grab a cup of hot chocolate, and dive into a good book. Until next time, happy reading!
