Mississippi Information Network (MissIN3) MPLS Consortium

Effective as of December 31, 2008 all libraries currently on MissIN3, MissIN2 sunset.

A. Logical network:

  1. Connectivity to the state of Mississippi MPLS cloud.
  2. Provides bundled services that are ERATE eligible
  3. Provides all branches and headquarters with direct internet
  4. Increases connection choices
  5. Increases equipment refresh rates
  6. Provides internet filtering and firewalling

B. Physical network:

  1. Comprised of existing points connected via leased lines and physical telecommunications devices.
  2. AT&T configures and supports physical connections and components.
  3. Problem resolution by AT&T, with MLC managing issue resolution and problem escalation.
  4. Service vrf's and network architecture modeling provided by MLC

C. Features and Services:

Present features and services provided exclusively by the Mississippi Library Commission to public libraries at no cost to public libraries are:

  1. Internet Utilization (bandwidth usage)
  2. Help Desk Support
  3. After hours emergency support
  4. SMS Alert network
  5. Vendor liaison services
  6. Technical Consultation
  7. Technical Assessments
  8. Web Site Hosting
  9. Email Accounts (Pop)
  10. Web Email
  11. Anti-Virus screening of emails
  12. Technology Trending and Training to public libraries
  13. Forensics

History

1995 - Mississippi Legislature passed Senate Bill 2945 providing bond funds for the development of the network.

1996 - House Bill 1004 clarified the language of Senate Bill 2945 and allowed the Mississippi Library Commission to receive and expend the bond funds.

1996 - MLC began the implementation of the network starting with the grant process to provide computers and printers for all libraries which chose to connect.

1997 - Connectivity of six pilot sites: Bolivar County, Harrison County, The Library of Hattiesburg and Petal, Jackson/Hinds, Meridian/Lauderdale County, and Lee-Itawamba County. Remainder of network participants were brought online by the end of 1997.

2002 - enhancements to Missin2 features and services including line speed upgrades, Help Desk support improvements, Information Technology Consulting Services, Internet Filtering, Web Email, Antivirus Screening of Missin2 Email Accounts.

2005 - Missin2 network launched over ATM core, faster, more stable, and video ready, multi-vendor partnership.

2006 - New state contract replaces legacy state backbone, and launches MPLS network. Libraries begin migrating to MPLS.

2008 - December 31, 2008 all libraries off legacy and migrated over to MPLS (MissIN3)
