So that all Mississippians understand, support and use public libraries, the Library Development Division staff offers consultation to public library systems directors, staff, library trustees, Friends groups, governing authorities and others on a variety of public library policy and management issues. In addition, division staff provides training and continuing education opportunities to assist in increasing library staff competencies in both traditional library services and in the new and emerging technologies.
Working with public library systems for sustained growth and development, services of the Library Development Division include Consulting Services, Continuing Education, Summer Library Program, E-rate Consultation, Statistics, and Support to Public Library Trustees and Friends of Libraries.
Resources developed by the division staff in this important mission include:
Mississippi Public Library Personnel Policy Development Guide
Mississippi Library Laws Annotated 2007 Edition
Mississippi Public Library System Accreditation Program Manual
Mississippi Trustee Handbook
MS Public Library Services Valuation Study
Resource Guide for Directors of Mississippi Public Library Systems (not available online)
Each library system has an assigned consultant who serves as a liaison to the services provided by the Library Development Division. Consultants travel extensively throughout the state offering on-site assistance and support to public libraries. Additionally, consultants provide expertise on subjects such as collection development, weeding, programming, library ethics, budgeting, personnel issues, working with friends groups, and more.
