Volunteer Groups
Volunteers play an important part in aiding BPHLS to provide excellent service to eligible Mississippians. Two groups of volunteers, the Telecom Pioneers and Friends of Handicapped Readers, assist BPHLS on a regular basis. Without them, we would be unable to provide the scope of service to which our patrons have become accustomed.
Many of our volunteers have been touched by sight loss. Some are spouses or relatives of patrons while others volunteer through their church. Others simply wish to support activities of the library, wish to make a difference in someone's life, or fulfill an inner need to do something for the community.
During the past 1 1/2 years, 52 volunteers donated over 4,377 hours to BPHLS. Hours of operation at BPHLS are from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Volunteers are asked to serve a minimum of one hour per week and to complete any project undertaken. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
The Telecom Pioneers repair cassette players for BPHLS patrons. Knowledge of electronics is essential for this specialized volunteer activity.
The Friends of Handicapped Readers assist through many venues. Local books and magazines are recorded onto audio cassette for our patrons through the local recording program. Other assistance includes tape duplication, rewinding, data entry, and assisting with special projects, such as labeling newsletters for mailing.
You are interested in volunteering at our library, please contact Rahye Puckett. Previous experience with people with disabilities is not required, simply a willingness to get involved.
