Jackson, Mississippi

Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, was named after Andrew Jackson. Jackson combines the energy of a big city with the down-home friendliness of a small town.

Strategically located between several major cities in the South, Jackson has become a commercial and technological hub.

It has been home to several major telecommunications corporations including Worldcom, Inc., (founded in Hattiesburg, Miss. in 1983), and SkyTel Communications, Inc.

Jackson is also a cultural and entertainment center with:

Performing arts and organizations: Ballet Magnificat!, Ballet Mississippi, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, New Stage Theater, Community Children's Theatre, Repertory Theatre of Mississippi, Jackson Community Concert Association, the Mississippi Opera Association, Black Arts Music Society, etc.

Attractions: the Jackson Zoological Park, Jim Buck Ross Agricultural & Forestry Museum, Mississippi Museum of Art, Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, Russell C. Davis Planetarium, Veterans War Memorial Building, etc.

Events: USA International Ballet Competition, Trustmark Tour Le Fleur International Bike Race, Jubilee Jam - Jackson Arts and Music Festival, Dixie National Rodeo & Livestock Show, Mississippi State Fair, Mississippi Championship Hot Air Balloon Race, CelticFest, etc.
